Version 1.0

The first release

Pennywick is on the App Store. It started because every budgeting app I tried wanted my bank login, and I did not want to give it to one.

So this one does the opposite. You point the camera at a receipt and Pennywick reads the merchant, total, date and category off it, on your device, and files the entry. Nothing is sent anywhere. There is no Pennywick account — the only identity involved is your Apple ID.

In this first version

  • Receipt scanning with the camera, read on-device with Apple Vision, with a confirmation step before anything is saved
  • Import from PDF, HTML and email files, for the receipts that were never paper
  • A full ledger with search, filters and tags
  • Budgets per category, tracked against what you actually spent
  • Savings goals with progress rings and a monthly streak
  • Multi-currency: foreign receipts convert at daily European Central Bank reference rates
  • Insights for where the money went this month
  • Face ID lock, and sync across your devices through your own iCloud
  • CSV and full backup export, and restore

What it deliberately does not do

No bank linking. No aggregator. No advertising, no ad tracking, no third-party analytics SDKs. Receipts are read on your device, and your ledger lives on your device and in your own iCloud — end-to-end encrypted, in your account, where I cannot read it.

Requires iPhone on iOS 18 or later.

If it misreads one of your receipts, I would genuinely like to see it. The awkward ones — faded thermal print, a metre of supermarket roll, a merchant name that is a holding company — are what make this hard and what make it better.

Pennywick is on the App Store. Something not working the way it should? Tell me — it's a one-person project and the messages get read.
